Should I take A-level Physics after GCSE?

The short answer is this: A-level Physics is worth serious consideration if you enjoy making sense of unfamiliar situations, are prepared to practise algebra and can cope with a problem taking several attempts. You do not need to find every GCSE topic easy, but curiosity and persistence matter.

Your school or college sets its own entry requirements. Some ask for particular grades in Physics or Combined Science and Maths; others use different thresholds or discuss a near miss individually. What is A-level Physics actually like?

Particle models develop into quantum physics, and practical work asks you to judge uncertainty rather than simply follow a method.

The course contains a substantial amount of maths. AQA states that at least 40% of its assessment marks require mathematical skills at Higher-tier GCSE standard. The difficult part is often not the arithmetic; it is deciding which model applies, rearranging the relationship and keeping units and signs consistent.

It is also an experimental subject. On AQA, at least 15% of assessment marks require practical skills, and the A-level practical endorsement includes a minimum of 12 activities. Expect graphs, control variables, uncertainty, evaluating methods and explaining whether evidence supports a conclusion.

The exact topic order and optional content depend on the exam board. Across courses, however, you should expect a mixture of explanation, calculation, data handling and practical reasoning. That variety is one reason Physics suits pupils who like both ideas and problem solving.

Is A-level Physics right for me?

A subject choice should fit the way you like to work. A grade can show that you have foundations, but it cannot tell you whether you will enjoy two years of the subject.

Ask your current Physics teacher where your marks came from. A pupil who loses marks through rushed units may need a different plan from one who finds algebra or written explanations difficult.

A-level Physics is challenging. That can be satisfying when you are curious about the ideas and have time to practise; it is draining if you are choosing it only because somebody else says you should.

What subjects go well with A-level Physics?

A-level Maths is the closest partner because it gives you more practice with algebra, functions, trigonometry and mechanics. It also keeps open most university physics routes: the Institute of Physics says most UK and Irish university physics courses require Physics and Maths.

That does not mean every pupil needs the same three subjects. Start with possible degrees, apprenticeships or careers, then check their actual requirements before enrolment.

Maths and Further Maths

Useful for physics, engineering, computing, economics and highly mathematical courses. Further Maths can help, but it is not offered everywhere and is not required for every route.

Chemistry

A strong combination for materials, chemical engineering, energy, medicine-related routes and physical sciences. It also develops practical and particle-level thinking.

Computer Science

Useful for simulation, data, electronics, robotics and software. Physics already develops modelling, so coding can give you another way to test a model.

Biology

Useful if you are interested in medical imaging, biomechanics, neuroscience or environmental science. Check medical course requirements carefully because Chemistry is often specified.

Design and Technology

A practical partner for engineering, product design and making. It can show how forces, materials, electronics and energy become real devices.

A contrasting subject

Languages, humanities or arts can build writing, judgement and communication. A mixed programme can work well when it meets the entry requirements for the routes you may want.

What can I do with A-level Physics? Careers and UK salaries

Physics can support routes through university, a degree apprenticeship, technical training or employment. The subject is useful well beyond a job called physicist because it develops mathematical modelling, data analysis and evidence-based problem solving.

The figures below are National Careers Service starter-to-experienced estimates, checked on 14 August 2026. They are guides rather than guaranteed pay: location, employer, training stage, sector and responsibility can move a salary outside the range.

Data scientist: £32,000 to £83,000

A data scientist uses statistics, software and models to find patterns in large datasets. Physics is useful because it trains you to test assumptions, analyse uncertainty and explain what a model can and cannot show.

Medical physicist: £40,000 to £65,000

A medical physicist works with imaging, radiotherapy, measurement and patient safety. This route normally needs a physics-rich degree followed by specialist clinical training.

Aerospace engineer: £30,000 to £70,000

An aerospace engineer designs and tests aircraft, spacecraft and satellites. University routes commonly ask for Maths and Physics, while degree apprenticeships provide another route into the industry.

Electrical engineer: £27,000 to £58,000

An electrical engineer can work on power systems, electronics, transport, renewable energy and control. Physics links circuit behaviour to the physical limits of real components and systems.

Research scientist: £27,000 to £48,000

A research scientist plans investigations, analyses results and develops new knowledge or products. Academic routes often involve postgraduate study, while industrial research can follow different training paths.

Physics teacher: £33,000 to £51,000

A career as a physics teacher means turning difficult ideas into explanations, demonstrations and practical work. The National Careers Service range is for secondary teaching generally; pay varies by nation, region and responsibility.

What should I do on GCSE results day?

Take your offer information and know how your sixth form or college expects you to enrol. Once you have your grades, compare them with the provider's published conditions rather than guessing what one result means.

If you narrowly miss a Physics or Maths requirement, speak to the provider. It may consider the full set of results, available places, teacher evidence or extra support, but only the provider can tell you what it will accept.

If you meet the conditions

Confirm the place, ask which exam board you will study and collect any summer or transition work. Starting that work early makes September less abrupt.

If you miss by one grade

Ask calmly whether the decision is final and what evidence is being considered. Do not assume that an online entry grade from a different college applies to yours.

If Physics is no longer available

Ask about another provider, a vocational science or engineering course, a T Level or an apprenticeship. A different route can still lead to technical and physics-related work.

If you are still undecided

Compare the first term of each subject, not only the job at the end. Ask yourself which lessons you would be willing to work at on a difficult Tuesday in November.

Why is A-level Physics worth considering?

Is A-level Physics hard?
