Answer all four parts. Show each stage of your working and give units where appropriate.

1(a)

A student investigates the motion of a small electric trolley. The trolley travels in a straight line and passes through two light gates. At the first light gate, the time is 0.20 s and the trolley's velocity is 0.50 m s⁻¹. At the second light gate, the time is 0.60 s and the trolley's velocity is 1.46 m s⁻¹. Assume that the acceleration is uniform between the light gates. Calculate the acceleration of the trolley between the light gates.

1(b)

The mass of the trolley is 0.75 kg. Calculate the resultant force on the trolley between the light gates.

1(c)

The motor provides a driving force of 2.5 N in the direction of motion. A resistive force acts in the opposite direction. Determine the magnitude and direction of the resistive force.

1(d)

In a second test, the motor provides the same driving force but the resistive force is larger. The mass of the trolley is unchanged. Explain why the acceleration of the trolley is smaller in the second test.
