Compare resources using reliability, response time, environmental impact, fuel availability, land use, cost and scale. Renewable does not mean impact-free, and a national grid needs a reliable mix.

Build the picture

Energy-resource decisions are always contextual. Wind and solar have low running emissions but variable output; gas can respond quickly but releases carbon dioxide. A well-supported answer balances demand, reliability, environmental impact and the available location.

Use the right relationship

Choose a relationship because of the physical change in the question, not because it is familiar. Kinetic energy: Eₖ = ½mv² (J, kg, m/s). Gravitational potential energy: Eₚ = mgh (J, kg, N/kg, m). Elastic potential energy: Eₑ = ½ke² (J, N/m, m). Keep the unit next to each value while you substitute.

What a strong answer does

Make a claim for the stated context, support it with a physics reason, acknowledge a limitation and reach a conditional judgement. Before writing, underline the command word and identify the information that matters. Keep a calculation as equation, substitution and answer with unit; keep an explanation as a linked chain using because, so or therefore. Finish by checking that the final sentence answers the exact context in the question and that the number, direction or conclusion agrees with the evidence given.

Example 1 · Choose for a remote island

Evaluate wind and diesel generation for an island with strong wind but variable demand.

  1. Give a benefit and limitation of wind.

Wind has no fuel cost and low running emissions but is intermittent. Diesel is controllable but needs fuel and releases CO₂. A mix with storage or backup is more reliable.

Example 2 · Explain reliability

Why cannot solar power alone supply every evening peak?

  3. Suggest a system response.

Compare a gas station and a tidal scheme.

Common wrong turns

Each of these is tempting because it sounds almost right. Replace it with the precise physics before you meet it in a question.

  • Equating renewable with reliable or impact-free.
  • Listing facts without a contextual judgement.
  • Saying energy resources “create” energy.
