What is covered

Questions and skills covered

The worksheet contains 6 pages of printable questions. A separate 6-page solutions PDF makes it easy to mark, review or share answers after the activity.

  • Named objects and energy stores
  • Chemical battery store versus electrical pathway
  • Hand-cranked hoist GPE and thermal energy account
  • Endpoint rest and zero kinetic energy
  • Passive lock and unchanged GPE
  • Trolley battery/kinetic/retained thermal/heating-out account
  • Open system boundary despite internal battery
  • Braking and mechanical work against friction
  • Electrical transfer to heater then heating water
  • Useful versus unwanted depends on intended task
  • Cooling water and stipulated closed water-room system
  • Common-scale energy blocks and missing budget
  • 60% and75% efficiency ratios
  • Inconsistent record with150J excess
  • Matched water-heating task and400Jinputdifference
  • Higher efficiency does not establish shorter heating time
  • Counterweight redistribution900=320+580J

About this activity

A repair café tests a hoist, battery-powered trolley and hot-water dispenser. Pupils use an energy account to correct imprecise explanations and judge repair claims.

Before you start

After teaching stores, mechanical/electrical/heating pathways, conservation and efficiency ratios. GPE/KE equations are supplied. No Higher-only improvement statement assumed.

A question from the worksheet

Question3(d),pupilpage3

Is a battery-and-trolley system closed merely because its battery is inside the boundary?

Show the answer

No. In the stated start,80J crosses the boundary by heating to the surroundings; the source being inside does not prevent energy leaving.

Common error: Calling electrical energy a moving object’s store, or saying energy dissipated into the room is destroyed.
