What is covered

Questions and skills covered

The worksheet contains 6 pages of printable questions. A separate 6-page solutions PDF makes it easy to mark, review or share answers after the activity.

  • Changing magnetic field induces p.d.
  • Current needs a complete circuit
  • Static field alone is insufficient
  • North/south approach and same-side withdrawal polarity
  • Swapped measuring leads
  • Magnet and coil moving together
  • Positive/zero/negative qualitative pulse sequence
  • Faster same-path motion gives higher, shorter pulse
  • mV to V conversion and signed threshold decisions
  • Strong-field changes do not guarantee a numerical threshold
  • Arithmetic mean of repeated peak readings
  • Coil-turn improvement and fair experimental comparison
  • Scaffolded six-mark comparative method
  • Loaded coil field opposes the original change
  • Repulsion on approach and attraction on withdrawal
  • External work at constant speed versus kinetic loss when coasting

About this activity

A railway workshop develops a contactless motion detector and investigates how its electrical signal and magnetic resistance change under controlled conditions.

Before you start

After teaching induced p.d./current, magnetic poles and energy transfers. All signs refer to a stated recorder convention; no right-hand rule or Faraday equation assumed.

A question from the worksheet

Question6(c), pupil page6

A north pole on the left is withdrawn to the left from a loaded coil. Predict the near-end pole and force direction.

Show the answer

The coil’s near end becomes south; attraction pulls the magnet right, opposing the leftward withdrawal.

Common error: Saying the induced field always opposes the original field, or assuming any induced p.d. must produce current in an open circuit.
