AQA GCSE Physics AC DC Generators and Output Graphs Worksheet
AQA GCSE Separate Physics Higher generator worksheet with answers. Compare AC and DC output graphs, contact arrangements and changes to generator output.
What is covered
Questions and skills covered
The worksheet contains 6 pages of printable questions. A separate 6-page solutions PDF makes it easy to mark, review or share answers after the activity.
- AC reverses direction; DC need not be constant
- Motion through field induces p.d.; closed path required for current
- Two separate slip rings and split-ring commutator
- Sliding brushes and electrical insulation
- Half-turn swapping of brush connections
- External AC graph, signed readings,0.20s cycle and300rpm
- Zero induced p.d. without zero rotation speed
- Four positive dynamo pulses across two complete turns
- Instantaneous0.20A and0A in a20Ω test resistor
- External lead reversal and reference polarity
- Stronger field, more turns and increased speed
- Fair generator test with speed and peak readings
- Single and double direction/field reversals
- Driver compatibility with0–4V positive pulses
- Pulsating output is not steady3V
- Open load retains induced p.d. but removes current-produced magnetic opposition
- Reversing tidal turbine changes fixed-lead dynamo polarity
About this activity
A harbour team must decide which generator output can power a specified walkway-lighting driver, including after a reversal of tidal turbine rotation.
Before you start
Separate Physics Higher generator effect, AC/DC, contact arrangements, signed graphs and V=IR. No A-level emf equation, RMS or electronics design is required.
A question from the worksheet
Question6(e), pupil page6
Does the original dynamo-driver compatibility remain valid when the turbine reverses but the magnet and external leads do not?
Show the answer
Not necessarily: the dynamo output polarity reverses, giving negative pulses relative to the driver’s required positive input.
Common error: Assuming a split-ring commutator guarantees a fixed chosen output polarity regardless of the mechanical rotation direction.
