What is covered

Questions and skills covered

The worksheet contains 8 pages of printable questions. A separate 8-page solutions PDF makes it easy to mark, review or share answers after the activity.

  • Magnetic Fields, Electromagnets and Motor Effect
  • Both-tier magnetic-field core. Q5(a)–6(c), motor-force direction and F=BIl calculations, are Higher only.
  • A recycling-line test station links magnetic material selection, repulsion evidence, bar-magnet field lines and compasses, wire and solenoid fields, and controlled electromagnet force comparisons. Pupils calculate means and ranges, test a trainee's claim and plan a fair turns investigation. Higher-only work builds from motor-force substitution and unit conversion to active wire length, safe current decisions and motor rotation. Six original pupil/solution PNGs support drawing and direction practice.

About this activity

A recycling-line test station links magnetic material selection, repulsion evidence, bar-magnet field lines and compasses, wire and solenoid fields, and controlled electromagnet force comparisons. Pupils calculate means and ranges, test a trainee's claim and plan a fair turns investigation. Higher-only work builds from motor-force substitution and unit conversion to active wire length, safe current decisions and motor rotation. Six original pupil/solution PNGs support drawing and direction practice.

Before you start

Both-tier magnetic-field core. Q5(a)–6(c), motor-force direction and F=BIl calculations, are Higher only.

A question from the worksheet

Original question from this worksheet

The sorting coil must hold with a mean force of at least 1.50 N. At 0.40 A the mean force is 0.80 N; at 0.60 A it is 1.80 N. Select the smallest tested current that meets the requirement and justify it.

Show the answer

Choose 0.60 A: its 1.80 N mean exceeds 1.50 N, whereas the next lower tested current, 0.40 A, produces only 0.80 N. This selects among measured settings; it does not establish the exact threshold between them.

Common error: Check units, the stated model and the course/tier labels before choosing the physics.
