What is covered

Questions and skills covered

The worksheet contains 7 pages of printable questions. A separate 7-page solutions PDF makes it easy to mark, review or share answers after the activity.

  • Electrical Power, Energy and Mains Safety
  • Both tiers: core Questions 1–6. OptionalQ7 costs replace1(c–e) for a matched lesson; not Higher-only content.
  • A community kitchen compares appliance ratings, heating-cycle energy and thermostat on-time. Pupils then interpret a metal-cased appliance fault, explain earthing and fuse protection, and compare transmission-cable heating losses. Repeated calculation practice is combined with decisions and precise written explanations.

About this activity

A community kitchen compares appliance ratings, heating-cycle energy and thermostat on-time. Pupils then interpret a metal-cased appliance fault, explain earthing and fuse protection, and compare transmission-cable heating losses. Repeated calculation practice is combined with decisions and precise written explanations.

A question from the worksheet

Original question from this worksheet

A 2300 W urn is switched on during a 30-minute service, but its thermostat keeps the heater operating for only 12 minutes in total. Assume zero electrical energy transfer while the heater is off. Calculate the energy transferred.

Show the answer

Use the actual on-time: t = 12 × 60 = 720 s. E = Pt = 2300 × 720 = 1 656 000 J. Using the full 30 minutes would overestimate the energy transfer under the stated assumption.

Common error: Check units, the stated model and the course/tier labels before choosing the physics.
