AQA GCSE Physics Moments, Levers and Gears Worksheet
Practise moments, balancing forces, perpendicular distances and gears. AQA GCSE Separate Physics PDF worksheet with worked answers and exam-style diagrams.
What is covered
Questions and skills covered
The worksheet contains 7 pages of printable questions. A separate 7-page solutions PDF makes it easy to mark, review or share answers after the activity.
- Moments, Levers and Gears
- Separate Physics 8463 only, Foundation and Higher. Not required Trilogy 8464 content.
- A maintenance workshop links a service lever, handle selection, a three-load tool tray and a simple gear drive. Pupils repeat moment, force and distance calculations, distinguish force position from unused lever length, balance combined moments and restore balance after a load moves. Practical planning includes pivot reference measurements and judging agreement within supplied measurement limits. Gear tasks use supplied radii and tangential contact forces, followed by a turning-moment decision.

A question from the worksheet
Original question from this worksheet
A balanced tray has a 12 N load 0.20 m right of its pivot and a 16 N load a further 0.25 m right. A third load acts 0.40 m left of the pivot. Calculate the third load. The tray's own weight acts through the pivot.
Show the answer
Clockwise moment = (12 × 0.20) + (16 × 0.45) = 9.6 N m. For balance, F × 0.40 = 9.6, so F = 24 N. The 0.25 m separation between the two right-hand loads is not the second load's distance from the pivot.
