About this activity

A parcel-conveyor manufacturer uses a trolley test track to compare force and mass effects, check light-gate measurements and plan two valid experiments.

Before you start

After teaching F=ma, acceleration as change in velocity per unit time, speed=distance/time, W=mg, unit conversions and basic experimental controls.

A question from the worksheet

Question2(c), pupil page2

A20g weight is transferred from a trolley to a hanger initially40g including its own mass. Total moving mass is0.80kg. At g=10N/kg, find the driving force and new total moving mass.

Show the answer

The hanging mass becomes60g=0.060kg, giving0.60N. Total moving mass remains0.80kg because no mass enters or leaves the moving system.

Common error: Increasing total moving mass after a transfer, omitting the empty hanger, or equating hanging weight with the tension acting on the trolley alone.
