Scalars and vectors

OCR A AS Physics · 2.3

Vectors have direction as well as magnitude. Resolving them into perpendicular components makes forces, motion and equilibrium easier to analyse.

Specification outcomes (4)
  • 2.3.1(a) Define scalar and vector quantities and give examples of each.
  • 2.3.1(b) Perform vector addition and subtraction.
  • 2.3.1(c) Use a vector triangle to determine the resultant of any two coplanar vectors by calculation or by scale drawing.
  • 2.3.1(d) Resolve a vector into two perpendicular components, Fx = F cos θ and Fy = F sin θ.
