Only the force component along the motion does work

An angled force can both support an object and move it. Resolving the force identifies the component that transfers energy through a given displacement.

W = Fs cos θ

Follow the reasoning

  1. Identify the displacement direction.
  2. Measure the angle between force and displacement.
  3. Multiply the parallel force component by the displacement.
