A circuit diagram is a measurement plan

OCR A AS Physics · Two ideas, one explanation

Correct meter placement determines which current or potential difference is measured. Circuit symbols communicate that plan independently of the physical wire layout.

Ammeter in series Voltmeter in parallel

Follow the reasoning

  1. Identify the component being investigated.
  2. Place the ammeter in its current path and the voltmeter across it.
  3. Choose suitable ranges and record units with readings.
Specification outcomes (4)
  • 4.2.1(a) Recognise and use standard circuit symbols.
  • 4.2.1(b) Construct and interpret circuit diagrams using correct symbols.
  • 1.1.2(a) How to use a wide range of practical apparatus and techniques correctly.
  • 1.1.2(b) Appropriate units for measurements.
