Turn an investigation question into measurements

OCR A AS Physics · Two ideas, one explanation

A useful experimental plan states what changes, what is measured and what is controlled. The apparatus must resolve the changes the investigation is intended to detect.

Question → variables → apparatus → recorded data

Follow the reasoning

  1. Identify the independent and dependent variables.
  2. Choose suitable instruments, ranges and controls.
  3. Specify a table with quantities, units and repeat readings.
Specification outcomes (6)
  • 1.1.1(a) Experimental design, including to solve problems set in a practical context.
  • 1.1.1(b) Identification of variables that must be controlled, where appropriate.
  • 1.1.1(c) Evaluation that an experimental method is appropriate to meet the expected outcomes.
  • 1.1.2(a) How to use a wide range of practical apparatus and techniques correctly.
  • 1.1.2(b) Appropriate units for measurements.
  • 1.1.2(c) Presenting observations and data in an appropriate format.
